เe: World Wide Web (WWW) is a widely used media for
information
sharing and dissemination. WWW based applications can be
found in every countries. The huge volume information involved
in these applications put high demands on information
retrieval technology. Existing information retrieval systems
were designed for English. These systems, however, are
unsuitable for oriental language, e.g. Chinese. In this
lecture, the basic problems in information retrieval for
oriental languages (and Chinese in particular) are outlined.
Moreover, the techniques employed by the IPOC Chinese
Information Retrieval system are discussed.
1) Introduction - What is Information Retrieval?
2) Different IR models
3) Evaluation of IR systems
4) Orienatl Language IR
5) Word-based Indexing
6) Case Study: The IPOC Chinese IR system

เe: Computer technologies and emerging display technologies
are
pushing us into a new era of computing where virtual
interactions across space and time will become commonplace.
In order to accelerate this era, we need to develop
inexpensive computer architectures, software systems, and
applications to achieve visual computing. In this talk,
I will give an overview of the display wall project at
Princeton University. This project attempts to attack several
research challenges. I will also show a video that documents
some aspects of our prototype system.
